16th Sunday in Ordinary Time - No. 20/17 - 23rd July 2017
The Last Word
Whether it becomes historic or not this is the last word from my pen [or should I say lap top] in our little newsletter. Over the years I have seen this as a voice in the community as well as a voice for the Church and its teachings. Not just for spiritual ears but also for the sometimes deaf ears. A voice often on the side of those marginalized, vulnerable or neglected. A voice that perhaps some might like to have silenced. I am most grateful to those who acknowledged this voice and expressed their appreciation of it. Those who helped the word travel via the internet or taking it to their place of work. In all its success has perhaps been simply the knowledge that “the pen is mightier than the sword”. So this final one is by way of reflection with ‘soft’ rather than any ‘hard’ words.
Where there is Love
Where there is love the heart is light,
Where there is love the day is bright.
Where there is love there is a song,
To help when things are going wrong.
Where there is love there is a smile,
To make all things seem more worthwhile.
Oh, blest are they who walk in love,
They also walk with God above.
As my final words will be said at our Mass of Thanksgiving on Monday 31st at 6p.m. in the Parish Church I leave you for now with the words of St. Paul as he took leave of the people of Philippi –“I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all, making my prayer with joy, thankful for your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to feel thus about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace”. [Philippians 1:3-7]

Taking my leave of You
This coming week will see my furniture removed into storage until I take up residence in Harolds Cross later in the year. In this way I finish my time with you as I began it as a ‘commuter’. I ask you to encourage and support Fr. Tom in his new responsibility as you have me over the years. Being a priest in todays world is not always easy and it those whom we are sent to serve who become our greatest strength. Much will go on perhaps as before but as a community the best way forward is being open to change. Indeed we have seen much change over our years together – not always welcome but we embraced it for the greater good. What we do as priest and people is for the glory of God. Keep that spirit alive in this community as you go forward and all will be well.
