God loves everything he creates; nothing he makes is evil. Similarly he loves and befriends each of his people and the gospel story is of Jesus’ friendship with a man whom everyone else looked down on.

Faith is a gift which is deepened or weakened in the experiences of our lives. Joy and success can make it easy to believe in God; sorrow and failure threatens our faith in God’s care. Our readings encourage us to keep faith in all life’s ups and downs.

The difference between wealth and poverty in the lives of many people is the theme of today’s gospel: the story is a parable we can apply to our own lives, - we cannot sit by contented in our own situations while our brothers and sisters are in want. Christ shared his love with us: we must do likewise.

The prophet Amos reminds us of our duty not to exploit the poor and needy while in today’s Gospel St. Luke tells us that we cannot serve both God and money. If we serve God, then, we will not forget today’s victims of poverty
